University Libraries Policies: Library Computer Use Policy

Rational

The Miami University Libraries public computers are provided primarily to enable access to the electronic resources provided and supported by the Libraries in advancement of scholarship and research. In addition, the Libraries endorse the Library Bill of Rights and the Freedom to Read Statement of the American Library Association.

Internet Disclaimer

The Libraries do not monitor or filter information accessed through public computers and cannot be held liable for the content or quality of information accessed. Discretion is advised when utilizing the Internet as information may not be accurate, and may be inappropriate or offensive.

Policy

Those using the Miami University Libraries are responsible for following the Responsible Use of Computing Resources Policy at Miami University (Miami University Policy and Information Manual, Section 19.2). To ensure effective and efficient access to information, the Miami University Libraries have established the following standards:

  • Logins are required on all computers. Miami students, faculty, and staff login with their Unique ID and Password. Those who are not affiliated with Miami obtain a guest login from the Circulation or Information desks throughout the libraries.
  • Computer use is expected to contribute to a comfortable and safe environment through respectful use of the Internet and public access computers.
  • Library computer hard drives should not be used to store information. Miami students, faculty, and staff may save files to their Netdisk space. Files may also be saved to USB drives which can be purchased at King Library’s Circulation desk.
