Access and Use O'Reilly E-books

Use this guide to link to O'Reilly E-books, search the Miami University library catalog for these and other e-books, and find citation guidance.

Five Key Things to Know About O'Reilly E-books

  1. O'Reilly includes thousands of e-books on topics related to information technology, business, and engineering.  They are available for you to read on or off-campus at any time.  You may find them by going to the O'Reilly E-books link above and using the search blank:  The search blank for O'Reilly E-books
or, you may find O'Reilly titles in Miami's Books and More catalog (linked on the "Books and E-Books" tab to the left) that have this link underneath their titles: Icon and text for "Connect to Safari Books online" link in Books & More catalog.
  2. O'Reilly also has many online courses and videos, too.  When you run a search in O'Reilly, the top of the search results will show a menu of types of resources, including courses, videos, and audiobooks:
Sample search results header from O'Reilly, showing types of items available: Books, Videos, Courses, Learning Paths, Playlists, and Audiobooks.
  3. Playlists help you keep track of the books, chapters, courses, and more that you are using or plan to use in the future.  To create a Playlist, click on this icon Playlist icon from O'Reilly E-books. Used to add any page or item you are viewing to a Playlist.  You will have the opportunity to name the Playlist, or if you already have Playlists, to choose which one should include the item.  You will see that icon at any point you are using O'Reilly, which enables you to keep track of not only whole books or courses, but even individual chapters or sections.  You can see your Playlists at any time by going to the left side of the page and expanding it by moving the mouse and then clicking on "Your O'Reilly"
Image of the left sidebar of the O'Reilly E-books site that shows the "Your O'Reilly" option where playlists are saved.
  4. You can share a link to a book, chapter, video, or other item in O'Reilly by adding the following link to the start of the URL displayed in your browser:  https://go.oreilly.com/ohiolinkmiami  This gives easy access to Miami students, faculty, and staff when they are away from campus. For instance, if I am viewing an e-book and want to link to this page:

A sample page in an O'Reilly e-book, showing the URL for the page.

I can copy the link in the browser URL bar above and add the go.oreilly.com precursor to it, to make this direct link:  https://go.oreilly.com/ohiolinkmiami/https://learning.oreilly.com/library/view/fundamentals-of-data/9781098108298/preface02.html#prerequisites  Then whoever clicks the link will be prompted to login using their Miami UniqueID and password (unless the person clicking is already on a Miami campus).
  5. O'Reilly Answers provides a search blank to enter a question that will be searched across all of the items in the database. To do this, click on the left sidebar option "Answers" and then enter your question (you'll see some sample questions to try, too).  For the question "how to add a row in Excel", the following result appeared.  You can view other results by clicking on the arrows to the right and left of the screen. A sample search for "how to add a row in Excel" using the O'Reilly Answers feature.
