Getting Started with GIS

GIS is applicable many subject areas.  This guide has been developed to provide a variety of information on how GIS works, what GIS is, and how to use it to enrich any subject. 

Broad Purposes of GIS

Basic Methods of GIS

  • Plotting locations of things on a map
  • Plotting quantities on a map
  • Plotting densities on a map
  • Determining spatial proximity
  • Mapping changes over time, and perform future predictions
