For Faculty: Instruction & Embedded Librarianship

Instruction

The library offers face-to-face and online research instruction sessions tailored to your curriculum and course needs. Research has shown:

  • Retention rates for students who participated in library instruction courses were significantly higher than for those students who did not attend a library instruction class.

  • First-year students who took classes that included information literacy instruction had higher grade point averages than students whose courses did not.

  • Students who participated in library instruction successfully completed 1.8 more credit hours per year than students who did not.

  • Those who received library instruction were nearly three times more likely to pass than those who did not.

Library instruction can focus on building students’ information literacy skills by demonstrating the differences between scholarly and popular materials, helping students refine search strategies, and teaching the students what to look for when evaluating potential resources and Internet sites.

Instructors are required to attend their class’s instruction session to ensure that the goals of the session are met and to answer student questions about the assignment. When scheduling instruction please provide us with a copy of the research assignment and any additional topics you’d like covered.

Instruction requests must be submitted at least 1 week prior to the preferred instruction date. For questions or to schedule a session, please contact Mark Shores at 785-3203 or fill out the Library Instruction Request form

Embedded Librarianship

An embedded librarian places resources in your Canvas course directly at the point of student need. Librarians will provide a course-specific research guide directing students to the best databases and supplemental resources for their assignments. The students will also have a dedicated librarian who is familiar with the course assignments if they need additional assistance.

Embedded librarian services can be used for both face-to-face and online courses.

For additional information about embedded librarian services, please contact Mark Shores or select ‘Embedded Librarian’ on our Library Instruction Request form.
