*Data as of June 2023. In California, state employees can choose to take Juneteenth off in lieu of a personal holiday. In Illinois, state workers get a paid holiday for Juneteenth only if it falls on a weekday. In North Carolina, Juneteenth is a floating holiday that some employees take off. In Pennsylvania, certain employees under the governor's jurisdiction get the day off as an "official annual observance." And each year since 2021, the governors of Alabama and West Virginia have issued a proclamation authorizing Juneteenth as a public holiday, but those states do not have legislation recognizing it as a permanent state holiday.
