Public Health: Off-Campus Access

Accessing Library Resources from Off-Campus

Library resources are only accessible to people who are currently enrolled or employed by Miami University. One of the ways our system verifies this is by your connection to the campus' internet, and so those who are trying to access resources from off-campus need another way to verify.

Like many other universities, Miami does have a VPN (virtual private network), but you will not be able to access library resources while using it.

Instead, you will need to make sure you search for sources using the library's website (as opposed to using a search engine like Google Scholar). This will prompt you to sign in to Miami's system and should provide you with access to our resources.

If all else fails, you can copy the URL below and paste it at the very beginning of the link to the article or resource you are trying to access (in front of the "https").

https://proxy.lib.miamioh.edu/login?url=

For example, this link:

https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.5951/mathteacher.108.5.0376

becomes

https://proxy.lib.miamioh.edu/login?url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.5951/mathteacher.108.5.0376

This will prompt you to sign in to Miami's system, and if we have access to the article or resource, it should provide you with the full-text.

Interlibrary Loan

Note, though, that the trick with the URL above doesn't work with everything. There will still be some things that we just don't have access to. In that case, you may have to submit a request for the material through a process called Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Miami Libraries subscribes to resources that support our students and faculty, but we can't get access to everything. Other institutions may have different subscriptions. If we don't have access to an article or resource that you need for your research, you can submit an ILL request for it and we will reach out to other libraries to get a copy for you. This is a free service but it may take a few days. Be sure to start your research early so we can make sure you can get what you need in plenty of time!

You can log in to our Interlibrary Loan system at any time to submit a request or check on requests you have previously submitted. You typically have 30 days to download requested resources once they have been received, so keep an eye on your email for those notifications.
