You can record in a storytelling format, conversational with a group, interview guests and get really creative in your presentation. There are some basics to consider when recording a podcast that can add to your production value and improve the quality of your product.

- A 2018 Pew study showed that 44% of Americans have listened to a podcast in their life. 26% listened in the last month, 19% in the last week.
- 67 million Americans listen to a podcast each month.
There is room for more growth:
- In 2018 there were 50 million YouTube channels, 440 million blogs but only 550,000 podcasts listed in Apple Podcasts. For every podcast there are 800 blogs and 90 YouTube channels. This is an opportunity to stand out!

Software options for recording your podcast
There are multiple software options for recording a podcast. Some to consider are:
Audacity-Audacity is a free and open-source digital audio editor and recording application software, available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and other Unix-like operating systems.
GarageBand-GarageBand is a line of digital audio workstations for macOS, iPadOS, and iOS devices that allows users to create music or podcasts.
Adobe Audition-A comprehensive toolset that includes multitrack, waveform, and spectral display for creating, mixing, editing, and restoring audio content, for PC or Mac.
What you need to get started:
A microphone: a good starter mic is a Blue Snowball -these are available for checkout at the circulation desk of King Library.
Its a good idea to add a pop screen to your microphone-this reduces popping noises when you speak.
Noise reduction-you can purchase equipment for this or use items around the home such as blankets and pillows to absorb sound.
