HST 197/198 (Smith): Home

Welcome to HST 197 and 198

The purpose of this guide is to help you find resources for your Comparative Review Essay for Dr. Matthew Smith's HST 197 and HST 198 classes.

If you are struggling to pick a topic, your best bet is to run your ideas by Dr. Smith after reviewing his advice in the assignment description. If you have picked a topic and are having trouble getting started, please feel free to contact me using the methods listed under my picture below. You can also schedule a Research Consultation for a one on one appointment with me any of the librarians.

Best Bets

Academic Search Complete - A good general database for finding articles from history journals. You can limit to scholarly, peer-reviewed articles and also use the "Choose Databases" link at the top of the page to cross-search other useful databases. Watch a tutorial on how to use Academic Search Complete.

Find Books - Use the catalog to find books owned by the Miami University libraries. You can have books sent from one Miami library to the one of your choice within 1-2 days. Watch a tutorial on how to use the catalog.

OhioLINK - Request books from other academic libraries in Ohio.

Other Search Tools

Historical Abstracts - Has articles from history journals for the time period 1450 to present. This is only useful for HST 198, not HST 197!

JSTOR - Full text scholarly journal articles across many disciplines. Limit your search to articles, by English language only, and to specific disciplines (History, Latin American Studies, Middle East Studies, etc.)
