The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) is a text-centric community of practice in the academic fields of social sciences, linguistics and humanities. It publishes a set of guidelines which specify standardized encoding methods for machine-readable texts for the purpose of research, presentation, annotation, teaching, and preservation of scholarly works. The most recent versions of the guidelines and a variety of supporting resources can be found on this site.

TEI By Example offers a series of freely available online tutorials including an introduction, examples detailing the different stages in marking up a document and tests.
