Display of Original Works of Art in Public Areas of the Libraries

The University Libraries wish to encourage and promote the use of appropriate space with the Libraries for the display of original works of art that support the mission of the University and the University Libraries. This policy outlines the requirements which must be met by those requesting use of this space. In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding outlining additional points of agreement may be required at the discretion of the Dean and University Librarian.

  • All requests to display works of art in public areas of any of the Libraries must be approved by the Dean and University Librarian
  • Consideration will be given primarily to requests that support the mission of the University and the University Libraries. Examples of such requests include: exhibits relating to the Libraries or its collections; displays relating to University-sponsored events or artists; and faculty-sponsored displays of student art.
  • The University Libraries will not normally display the work of individual artists in public areas of the Libraries if that work is not related to the University's or Libraries' mission as outlined above.
  • Approved exhibitors are responsible for hanging, security, and removal of their work. The exhibitor agrees to:
    • Use installation methods that to no permanent damage to the library facility or exhibit space.

    • Be responsible for repairing any damages incurred to the facility

    • Hold the Libraries and the Libraries' staff acting in their official capacity harmless for any damage or theft that may occur to the exhibit while it is on display in the University Libraries.

    • Obtain approval from the Dean or her proxy for any signage that markets the exhibit within the Libraries or accompanies the exhibit within the Libraries.

    • Install and remove the exhibit without assistance from the Libraries' personnel.

  • The University Libraries should be recognized as a co-sponsor in any publicity regarding the exhibition.
