Welcome to MakeHERspace!

MakeHERspace 2024, March 8th, 1-4 pm

Welcome to MakeHERspace!

MakeHERspace is an DEI-focused maker event, offered annually in the Makerspace at King.

This year, we will explore the rich history of women using plants and gardening in activism and fighting for gender equity throughout history through education, community, and communal crafting.

The event will open with a lecture from 1 - 2 p.m. by Mary Dudley, Ecology Education Manager at the Civic Garden Center of Cincinnati and President of Westwood Grows, an ecology education nonprofit organization. The presentation, titled, “Natural Birth: A Guide to Common Herbs Used by Midwives”, will explore how herbs have been used to treat and heal women for centuries, and how the advent of modern medicine has pushed these traditional techniques aside.

From 2 - 4, join us for plant-themed maker activities, including laser-cut plant earrings, mini pot painting, plant propagation, and mini terrarium necklaces. The organizing librarians have also curated and purchased books on the topic of botany, ecology, gardening, and women’s empowerment as well as created a research guide with project tutorials, book recommendations, research articles, and websites.

Join us Friday, March 8th, 1 - 4 p.m. You can drop in anytime to grab a snack, peruse educational resources, and make plant-themed maker projects!
