Birth, death and marriage information can be found in many places and in many different forms. Official birth, death and marriage records/registers are officially recorded in states and counties/cities and not at the federal level. Dates that each state or locality began recording these vital records vary by each locality. Sometimes locally produced indexes exist and are held at a local library. Other ways to discover death records include the Federal Mortality Censuses (1850-1900), individual cemetery records and locations of graves through FindAGrave and BillionGraves.
