Images

Visual Art - Paintings, Sculptures and Photographs

Artist's name. Title of work. Date of Composition. Medium of Composition. Institution that houses work, City.

Example:

Perutz, Dolly Hellman. Bird Flying Machine. 1973. Bronze. Central Park, New York.

or

Evans, Walker. Penny Picture Display. 1936. Photograph. Museum of Mod. Art, New York.

Online Images

Artist's name. Title of work. Date of Composition. Institution that houses work. Title of database or Web site. Medium of publication. Date of Access.

Example:

Currin, John. Blond Angel. 2001. Indianapolis Museum of Art. IMA: It's My Art. Web. 9 May 2007.

Video (film)

For films still in theaters or not yet on DVD or video, use Film as the medium of publication.  Movies that have been released on DVD, VHS, Laser disc or other medium, use the name of the medium at the end of the citation. If you are citing the contribution of a particular individual, begin with that person's name.  

Title of movie. Director. Performer(s). Distributor, Year of release. Medium of publication.

or

Director. Title of movie. Performer(s). Distributor, Year of release. Medium of publication.

Example:

The Usual Suspects. Dir. Bryan Singer. Perf. Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Chazz Palminteri, Stephen Baldwin, and Benecio del Toro. Polygram, 1995. DVD.

or

Chaplin, Charles, dir. Modern Times. Perf. Chaplin and Paulette Goddard. United Artists, 1936. Film.

Video (television)

"Title of episode." Title of the program or series. Name of the network. Call letters of the station, City. Date of broadcast. Medium of publication.

You can include the names of writers, directors or performers after the Series Title if desired. 

Example:

"The Blessing Way." The X-Files. Fox. WXIA, Atlanta. 19 Jul. 1998. Television.

For recorded television episodes:

"Title of episode." Title of the program or series. Distributor, Date of distribution. Medium of publication.

Example:

"The One Where Chandler Can't Cry." Friends: The Complete Sixth Season. Writ. Andrew Reich and Ted Cohen. Dir. Kevin Bright. Warner Brothers, 2004. DVD.

YouTube

Author or Poster’s Username. "Title of Video." Type of Media. Name of WebsiteName of Website's Publisher, Date of Posting. Medium. Date of access.

Example:

Sound Recordings

Composer, Conductor, Ensemble or Performer. Title of the recording. Artist(s) (if distinct from first-listed person)Manufacturer, Year of issue. Medium of publication. 

The date of the recording may also be included in the citation directly before the Manufacturer.

Example:

Holiday, Billie. The Essence of Billie Holiday. Columbia, 1991. CD.

To cite a specific song:

Artist(s). "Title of song." Title of the recording. Manufacturer, Year of issue. Medium of publication.

Example:

Holiday, Billie. "God Bless the Child." Rec. 9 May 1941. The Essence of Billie Holiday. Columbia, 1991. CD.

Creating a Works Cited Page

In MLA style your bibliography should be called Works Cited.

A hanging indent should be used for each citation.

Within your Works Cited list, your references should be in alphabetical order based on the author's last name.  If there is no author listed, use the title of the source.
